Restoring native prairies in Chicago, IL
Our mission is to compost monocultured lawns back into the soil and to grow native Illinois prairies in their place. We do this to restore an ecosystem that is healthier for soil, plant, animal, and insect life. We do this to restore beauty to a monotonous landscape, by letting biodiversity and color flourish and change throughout the seasons. We do this to rebuild an ecosystem capable of trapping more carbon and pollutants from the atmosphere.
We use human power, accepting the limitations of work that doesn’t use fossil fuels, to minimize the negative impact we have on the environment. As such, we are hyperlocal – based in Albany Park, Chicago, we work within a 10-mile radius of our home.
It’s important that beautiful healthy ecologies are accessible to everyone in our community, so we offer a sliding scale for our labor. We hope to encourage enthusiasm around prairies and other native ecosystems that are disappearing, and to spread this as a social and ecological movement.
